SCOURGING

  Second Sorrowful Mystery:
The Scourging
BAR

In his vain hope to satisfy the high-priest and the Pharisees, Pilate handed Jesus over to the soldiers to be scourged. His clothes were taken off. He was tied to the whipping-post. Then, an officer counting the strokes, He was lashed. The whips were made of leather thongs with bone or metal at the tips. So every one of these cruel strokes cut into His back and shoulders. Cut upon cut, wound upon would was made on His Sacred Body.

FRUIT OF THE MYSTERY: MORTIFICATION OF THE SENSES

Jesus, as a proof of His great love for us, underwent terrible sufferings. No rope would have been strong enough to keep Him bound to that post of shame and suffering, if He had not wished to undergo it all for us. He was silent and willingly accepted all the pain; He endured the cruel scourging, offering each stroke to His Heavenly Father in satisfaction for our sins.
