Third Sorrowful Mystery:
The Crowning with Thorns
Accused of wanting to make Himself King, Jesus was mocked as a King by
the soldiers. They put on Him a purple robe, and in His Hand they put a
reed for a sceptre. Then they plaited a crown of sharp thorns and
placed it on His Head, pressing it down so that the thorns pierced into
His Sacred Head. Then they bowed their knee saying "Hail, King of the
Jews!" They spat on His Divine Face; they struck His Head, jeering at
Him all the while. Jesus suffered on in silence.
FRUIT OF THE MYSTERY:
WILLINGNESS TO UNDERGO HUMILIATION IN ORDER TO SERVE GOD
------
CONTEMPT OF THE WORLD
Look now, O proud human heart, you who fear any loss of face, and hope
for honors! Who is this Man in purple robe and made a shame of, like a
most useless slave? He is your King and God! He has been despised as
the lowest of men! He saves you from endless shame and heals you from
rottedness of pride. This King of everlasting glory wears the crown of
thorns even till death to make satisfaction to the Divine Justice for
your pride and all the sins which grow from it.
