POPE ST. MARCUS
Pope St. Marcus:
336

The sepia print of the Pontiff by Melozzo da Forli, who executed some of the famous angels in the Vatican, 15th Century. Although this Pontiff reigned for less than a year he, too, was Martyred for the Faith. The Arian heresy had begun but during his tenure he was not involved.  Pope Liberius who succeeded Marcus' successor was, however. Marcus was one of the first line of Popes who were all Martyred, 35, he being the 34th. After him came Pope St. Julius I, the last Martyr in this unbroken line. Then Liberius, and a subsequent line of Martyred Vicars of Christ. Pope Marcus began the work on two basilicas, one San Marco for the Apostle, where this image makes its home.
