Murillo
14

Some provenances in art books on Murillo have this image
catalogued as The Assumption, and others, the Walpole Immaculate
Conception. It is difficult to believe that experts on Murillo could
differ. When The Assumption title is assigned to this image, the dates
are earlier than 1680. So I am led to believe that perhaps the artist
painted two images so similar that any difference is not detected by
the human eye of the average viewer, such as myself. In the Encyclical
directory this image is titled The Assumption and here we title it
as you see above. We have both versions but after scanning at a high
resolution I cannot distinguish one from the other, other than the
amount of ochre pigment, and this is so slight as to render any
difference as unremarkable.
