   O God, Who hast exalted blessed Philip, Thy confessor, in the glory of Thy Saints, grant that, as we rejoice in his commemoration, so may we profit by the example of his virtues, through Christ Our Lord.

   St. Philip Neri, Apostle of Rome and Founder of the Congregation of the Oratory: 

St. Philip was born in Florence, Italy in 1515. At age 18 he spent two years living by himself in prayer and penance in Rome. After reading of the great missionary work St. Francis Xavier was doing in India, St. Philip wanted to pursue the same path, but through a vision he received a message from St. John the Evangelist: "Rome is to be your Indies," St. Philip also received a mystical experience of Divine love which enlarged his heart so that it literally broke two of his ribs. Philip was ordained and spent the rest of his life converting and sanctifying souls in the city of Rome, which had become lukewarm and corrupt; he became famous as a confessor. St. Philip founded the Congregation of the Oratory, a community of priests who do not take the vows of religion. Through his own holiness, and also through his cheerfulness and his gifts of miracles [he raised a boy from the dead] and of reading hearts, St. Philip Neri transformed the city of Rome in his own lifetime and thereby exerted an incalculable influence on the Universal Church. He died in 1595 at midnight. He had said Holy Mass prior in the day.
