This painting was inspired by the artist's teacher, Sebastiano Conca,
and by a predecessor, Annibale Carracci, the master he most admired.
Gaetano Lapis is one of the foremost Counter-"Reformation" painters. Of
all of his images, this one is the most difficult to scan because of
the delicate, misty-like quality and the alabaster tones in the
figures' features. Sharpening for display on the web diminishes the
work, rather than enhances.
