Guido Reni was
an Italian painter and engraver from Bologna who studied at the
Carracci Academy after which he established himself in Rome as a
leading Baroque artist and a rival of Caravaggio. His Bologna studio
produced mainly religious paintings that maintained their popularity
throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. He was an important and
influential figure whose works were much imitated. Today his works are
reproduced both as poster prints and oil paintings since his popularity
has increased. Catholic Tradition often displays his work in various
galleries and directories.
