JUAN VALDES LEAL
c. 1660-1680
Juan Valdes Leal was born May 4, 1622 in Seville, Spain and died there October 15, 1690.
The son of a Portuguese father, he was educated in Córdoba
and worked there and in Seville. After the death of Bartolomé Murillo, he was Seville's leading
painter. The hallmarks of his paintings are vibrant, exotic colors, dramatic lighting, and
vigorous brushstrokes. This is one of his lighter works in that the tones are more subdued.
