MADONNA 45: BOUGUEREAU DETAIL

The French artist who lived from 1825-1905 once wrote:

"Each day I go to my studio full of joy; in the evening when obliged to stop because of darkness I can scarcely wait for the morning to come . . . My work is not only a pleasure, it has become a necessity. No matter how many other things I have in my life, if I cannot give myself to my dear painting I am miserable." -----William Bouguereau

The artist full of joy was sometimes decried by his contemporaries because he maintained a traditional approach to his Catholic faith in religious paintings, although like many artists he indulged in the worldly celebration of nudes and mythological figures. He is best known for his portraits of mothers and children and The Virgin of the Angels, which is part of the our Angels' presentation in September of every year. Another of his famous works, the Song of the Angels is used for one of the graphic sets in the Cathlic Classics directory, PRAYER THE GREAT MEANS OF SALVATION.
