MADONNA 17:TENDERNESS

Madonna and Child
POMPEO BATONI
1708-1787

Pompeo Batoni was a Rococo Era painter, elaborate as was the Baroque, the style it followed, but with a lighter quality and an emphasis on the figures. Tiepolo also belonged to this school, but it was actually in France that it was the most popular. This oil painting is in the Galleria Borghese, Rome, but we received a Christmas card many many years ago that featured this image which I preserved in a special binder of extra special greeting cards. Batoni is a favorite of Catholic Tradition, and this Madonna is the work we cherish the most, for its tenderness.

Batoni was also portraitist to popes and to the European aristocracy, in particular the English, excelling in the field.
