Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato [also known as Giovanni
Battista Salvi] (1609-1685) was an Italian Baroque painter: he is named
after his birthplace, Sassoferrato, by which single name he is also
known. He studied under Domenichino in Naples. The Baroque period was
approximately 1500-1700 and consisted of more elaborate ornamentation.
Although Salvi is classified as a Baroque artist, he actually used
little ornamentation or detail in most of his work, unlike his teacher
Domenichino. We have images of Angels and Saints by the latter artist,
but no Madonnas in our collection of masterpieces, unfortunately.
