MADONNA 98: SAINTS

The Vision of Friar Lauterio
MURILLO
c. 1638

The Friar, a theologian, was having difficulties with interpretation at one point in his studies. He prayed to St. Francis of Assisi, shown on the left, asking him to reveal the solution; at that moment, the Virgin and Child, along with St. Thomas Aquinas [center] and St. Francis, appeared to him; St. Francis told him to consult the Summa of Aquinas, which the Friar had not readily studied. After the vision he returned to the Summa where he discovered the answer which was found on the very pages that he opened the volume to.

This just has to be one of the most exquisite paintings in the world. We never tire of gazing on it and contemplating the heaven-sent scene.
