The Coronation of the Virgin
FILIPPO LIPPI
c. 1469
Fresco, Cathedral in Perugia [Spoleto].
This image is badly cracked; we removed only the worst of the deterioration,
leaving most of the image exactly as it is today.
The Coronation is considered among the elder Lippi's two finest works:
a fresco is a painting executed on fresh, moist canvas, using earth
tone pigments mixed with water.
The artist died in Spoleto soon after undertaking the fresco; his
son, Filippino Lippi, finished it. Filippo Lippi led a controversial
life, but this is not germane to our purpose here, so we do no more
that refer to this sad fact by way of historical accuracy. I prefer to
think that the Virgin interceded on his behalf before her Son, if for no other reason than his many tender depictions of
her show how much he must have loved her, despite his moral failings as
a professed Carmelite.
