BANNER
MADONNA 68: CONSOLATION

The Madonna of the Confraternity
of Consolazione

PERUGINO
1498

The Confraternity of Flagellants of Santa Maria Novella, Perugia, commissioned this panel, and thus one views members of the order kneeling in supplication around the Madonna and Child. It was the custom to depict donors of religious works in smaller scale than the central figures, although on occasion the practice was disregarded. This piece was intended as a form of banner or gonfalone, that is an entry art display to be hung from on high.
