We regret to say that we do not have a print of the full image.
Sebastiano Mainardi was an Italian High
Renaissance artist who lived from 1460-1513;
he was the brother-in-law of Domenico
Ghirlandaio, the master painter.
One can see the influence of his relative in the features and coloring of the Madonna. In fact,
unless one knew that Mainardi was the painter, Ghirlandaio could easily be mistaken for him.
Queen of the Angels, Mary, thou whose smile
Adorns the heavens with their brightest ray;
Calm star that o'er the sea directs the way
Of wandering barks unto their homing isle;
By all thy glory, Virgin without guile,
Relieve me of my grievous woes, I pray!
------GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO, The Queen of the Angels
