The Virgin of the Apocalypse
"MASTER OF MOULINS" JEAN HEY
c. 1498
Cathedral, Moulins
This work, made for the cathedral of Moulins, was commissioned by Peter
II, duke of Bourbon, and his wife, Anne of Beaujeu, daughter of the
king of France, Louis XI. This late Flemish Gothic scene is
dominated by the figure of the Virgin and Child, encircled by a large
multicolored halo, almost a mystical aureole; the Virgin rests her feet
on a crescent moon, following an iconography typical of the Immaculate
Conception. She is surrounded by a choir of Angels, two of which hold a
crown above her head. The light of the circle radiates outward to these
young Angels, whose bright faces are pervaded by absorbed, dreamy
expressions.
