MADONNA 8: TONDO

Adoration of the Child
FRANCESCO BOTTICINI
1482

This tondo-----a circular painting-----by Botticini shows the Flemish influence because of the intricate detail and the profusion of flowers. The depiction of the naked Infant Savior was a defense of the Incarnation and meant no disrespect. Botticelli's influence is also noticeable: six Angels in attendance.

The image is tempera [pigments mixed with a glutinous substance or egg yolk] on wood and makes its home in the Pitti Palace Gallery, Florence.
