BANNERANIMATED GEM

Welcome to our special gallery, in response to a request from a regular visitor. Many of the images on exhibit are already online in other directories. The lady who suggested the gallery thought that it would be helpful if these popular calendar pictures were assembled in one place.

Space limitation does not permit every image to be displayed.

We are also displaying several images that have never been used before at Catholic Tradition.

This gallery is dedicated to Pope St. Pius X because he favored traditional imagery that taught the faith with its simplicity and sweetness. When we use the phrase, "traditional imagery" we mean those pictures that were executed post-Baroque, from the middle of the eighteenth century to the present time: images that do not contradict the Faith in essence, and that have a general appeal to the common man who is stirred to
devoutly contemplate some aspect of the Catholic Faith because he is drawn to the image. Moreover, traditional art is distinguished from the masterpieces of the great artists, in that it is more easily copied, an attribute that furthers piety and devotion and is more readily available to regular folks. While a number of calendars feature masterpieces, for generations there have been and continue to be those calendars that popularize the more traditional pictures. This is not to say that the great master painters did not have the piety of the people in mind, but rather that the particular style of the epoch of each artist was so significant that it unconsciously limited the focus of the devotion, not always, but often enough, although the fact that until modern photography and publishing became widespread, most people had few opportunities to spend time with a masterpiece. Thus it was to the traditional works that were attainable the average Catholic turned. And not only to calendar art but to that executed for the local parishes, such as that of the last two centuries here in the United States. These images invite the viewer into the picture, to meditate or worship the Divine Majesty in Heaven and in the Tabernacle on the Altar, depending on the scene.

Another form of traditional Catholic art is the holy card. Perhaps the best known artists for all three forms are those of German heritage or influence. These men and women excelled in devotional art. Traditional Catholics who read The Remnant newspaper are long familiar with the captivating black and white lithographs that have lent their charm to this periodical's pages for generations.

Whether calendar, church nave or card, all are calling us to a conversation with Heaven! The simplicity of these images is the natural accompaniment to Gregorian chant, if found in a church. Wherever they extend themselves to those who lovingly gaze there upon, they are cherished like a treasure, for within this kind of art we as Catholics are always at home. They live in the heart as they grace the hearth of peace and Christian hope and longing . . .

THE IMAGES ARE NEITHER IN ALPHABETICAL OR CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, BUT THEMED, SIMPLY AS WE "REDISCOVERED" THEM.

We are using an unconventional approach to conserve space, for almost every image exceeds a 1000 pixels in width. There are four "rooms" in the exhibit. Each room is self-contained, that is, the link for each image brings up the image itself while remaining in the room, rather than move in succession from page to page. This directory also constitutes the first room.
